Open Your M.I.N.D. (Mental Illness Needs Demystifying)

This program looks at mental illness from the individual's perspective. It was developed by CMHA and various community organizations in cooperation with the local school board. A panel of professionals along with one or two individuals who have experienced a mental health issue take over class (approx. 1 hour, 20 minutes). One individual shares his/her story (i.e.. Bi-polar disorder) followed by a question period. Questionnaire, definitions, and community resources are shared during the presentation as well.

Programming has included the following:

  • Grade seven and eight program - workshops addressed self-esteem, identifying and handling emotions, communication, peer pressure, and the consequences of our behaviour

  • High school program - workshops to broaden the student's awareness of mental health issues and give them tools to use in maintaining their emotional and mental health. Areas covered include depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, symptoms of abuse, suicide, personality disorders, eating disorders, and stress/self esteem
